NYC Hot Sauce Expo: Volcanic Peppers’ Fiery Pizza Challenge (featuring Grimaldi’s Pizzeria)
Quite a long weekend for me and my travels to and fro the sho. I got a little sunburned, but it was well worth the price of admission. THE NYC Hot Sauce Expo was larger than life and it was my extreme honor to sponsor the very first ever spicy pizza eating contest with Tim Bader of Volcanic Peppers and the legendary Grimaldi’s Pizzeria of Brooklyn. A big thanks to Steve Seabury of High River Sauces to allow us to bring this special event to the good people of NY. Lastly a HUGE thank you goes out to Steven “The Murph” Murphy of Murph’s Famous Bloody Mary Mix who secured me Grimaldi’s with his calling on favors and twisting of arms. You are the man Murph, I owe you one now.
The winds were really howling and it made it very difficult to film with a tripod too light to be stable. We lost the introduction to the contest, so we start off with a 3 count to start the video off. My apologies for that. The contest is simple, the 1st one to complete the Grimaldi’s pizza pie or eat the most within the 7 minute time limit will be declared the winner. The crowd seemed to be really into it. Being that the challenge was outside and on level ground with the crowd, we did not have much room to film with the crowd closing in as the contest unfolded. Luckily for me I had John Scrovak of EatMoreHeat.com to help me with the camera work and he brought the closeup view midway through the contest. Congrats to the winner (SPOILER ALERT…name at the bottom of the post).
I will also show some behind the scenes at Grimaldi’s Pizzeria in a video I will be posting sometime in the next few days. They showed me how to put the pizza together and their secrets in how to make the perfect pizza. Can you believe it only takes 3 minutes in their oven to produce some exquisiteness? Look for that in the days to come as well as some footage from the Screaming Mi Mi Awards.

Congrats to the winner, John Krasnow!
That was a lot of fun, hopefully we can do it again next year. Nice working with you on this project Al.
Ditto Tim. I did take an extra Italian Seasoning by mistake, sorry boobie. I owe you one at the next show.
No worries Al, enjoy them
Thanks man, I will.
So, what exactly was on the pizza, it looked delicious.
I will be posting a video in the next few days of the interview I did with Grimaldi’s which includes making of said pizza pie.
Man what was on the pizzas….never saw anyone eat pizza so slow,LOL
PS That was one hell of a trophy!
They used my 10 pepper flakes on the sauce. 3 variety of Bhut, 3 variety of 7-pot, Moruga Scorpion, Habanero, Scotch Bonnet and Fatali. And it’s not mostly habanero and then a little bit of the super hots, they are pretty even.
