LUSTY MONK MUSTARDS SCORES 2ND CONSECUTIVE TOP HONOR AT SCOVIE AWARDS
2014 Scovie Awards recognize best fiery foods from record-breaking 864 entries
Albuquerque, NM – Scovie Awards judges and top culinary experts awarded the 2014 Overall Grand Prize to Albuquerque local Lusty Monk Mustards for their Original Sin Mustard. This is the second consecutive Overall Grand Prize win for Lusty Monk, who took home in honor in 2013 for their Burn in Hell Chipotle Mustard.
Lusty Monk Mustards’ owners Steve and Kris Monteith expanded their operations from Asheville, North Carolina to Albuquerque in 2008, producing small batches of mustard out of the South Valley Economic Development Center kitchen. The product line includes Original Sin, an old-style coarse-ground original recipe mustard with a kick, Burn in Hell which features a smoky bite of chipotle, and Altar Boy Honey Mustard.
Twang of San Antonio, Texas took home the grand prize award in the advertising and marketing division for their Beer Salt 3-Pack packaging design featuring their Lime Beer Salt, Lemon-Lime Beer Salt and Hot Lime Beer Salt.

Competition for the 2014 Scovie Awards was tougher than ever, with a new record of 864 total entries, up from 805 in 2013. The total number of companies entering was also a record at 151, up from 133 the previous year. The larger number of companies and entries caused two other records: companies winning at least one award increased from 93 to 105, and the number of non-winning companies also increased a bit from 40 to 46, meaning that 70 percent of companies entering won at least one award.
Dave DeWitt, founder of the Scovie Awards and the National Fiery Foods and Barbecue Show said entries came from 39 US states and seven countries including Austria, Canada, Ecuador, Australia, St. Lucia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
“Companies from all over the world continue to recognize the Scovie Awards as the most competitive blind taste tested event in the world,” DeWitt said. “I’m thrilled that participation in the awards continues to increase year after year.”
Guests can sample and buy Scovie Award-winning products at the upcoming 2014 National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show (February 29 –March 2, 2014) at Sandia Resort and Casino in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Vendors from across the country will be in attendance, including some of the biggest Scovie
