Comfort Food Showdown: Round 1 – #5 Ice Cream vs #12 Fruit Salad

UPDATED BRACKET

Happy New Year everyone. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season. We are once again back with another battle of our Comfort Food Showdown. I thought it would be appropriate in the wake of the annual traditional New Year’s Resolutions we love to make, to pit a healthy option in Fruit Salad vs one of the biggest vices known in the foodie universe, Ice Cream. It might be the only time of year that Fruit Salad might stand a chance in hell to beating a giant in Ice Cream. It might already be over in most minds, but as always lets go over the details for each combatant.

Comfort Food Showdown: Round 1 – #8 Beef Stew vs #9 Baked Beans

Sometimes I wonder when we pair up two of these comfort foods how we got to these rankings. Baked Beans is a comfort food? Well, not to anyone in the room with the person that had some! Yet, here we are pitting a food made famous in a scene from the great comedy, “Blazing Saddles” vs a slow cooker food legend. Beef Stew is the favorite here at #8 vs #9 Baked Beans. I am not sure this fight is fair, but I have been wrong before. Can a beefy family dish recipe that everyone seems to have in their home in, lose to a gassy delicacy? Let us call a spade a spade here, baked beans is a side dish that makes you fart and Beef Stew is a meal, I mean a hearty food with delicious veggies that you can to pick out if you do not like them. Baked Beans, well you can add bacon or hot dogs or sausage, maybe some bbq sauce or brown sugar, but it is pretty much just beans. Both dishes are so different it is so hard to compare the two. In the end, farts will happen and there is nothing a vote can do about it. I still urge you to vote below for your favorite of the two in this week’s Comfort Food Showdown.

Comfort Food Showdown: Round 1 – #3 Chili vs #14 Clam Chowder

This is New England vs the World in my humble opinion. If you grew up with Clam Chowder whether it be New England or Manhattan varieties, you have a natural prejudice and have this huge chip on your shoulder towards those that might think your soup is being disrespected. I grew up on Long Island, NY…

Comfort Food Showdown: Round 1 – #8 Onion Rings vs #9 Crab Cakes

We have our next combatants in what might be a very close battle. You have your classic crunchy side item, fried, beer battered big, small, whatever you might find the most pleasing. Do you dunk your onion rings or just munch on them? With a burger, on a burger? Then the other side we have an entree that is the staple for the Baltimore region and some would say it’s reach has no bounds – The Crab Cake! Everyone has their own recipe, every restaurant serves it up in their own way. Some places have mini-versions to pop right into your mouth. With Old Bay or without Old Bay? This cake is in no way shape or form, a dessert, but people will go out of their way for some popular restaurant version. Can you say the same for Onion Rings? I have never started a restaurant discussion with, “I am in the mood for onion rings, where should we go?” Yet, if you find a really good onion ring that hits the spot, you might feel like you found the comfort in this food which is what this tournament is all about.

So this battle is about…

Comfort Food Showdown: Round 1- #8 Chocolate Chip Cookies vs #9 Pumpkin Pie

We kick off the CFS Tourney with a dessert battle. Who does not love a good cookie now and then? Perhaps the most popular cookie ever created is the chocolate chip cookie. Warm from the oven or the cookie dough beforehand this icon sweet might be the easiest dessert to find in any grocery store. So many different versions and recipes, but who is to judge which is the best when people make them at home. Then we have the Autumn classic, pumpkin pie. A staple on Thanksgiving and a hit during Halloween after the jack-o-lanterns are carved. A dollop of whipped cream after the holiday meal and people will happily go into a food coma afterwards. Tis the season or is it? We shall find out…
