September is Chilehead Month

Chilehead Monthly September logo

Before we get going on our 2nd newsletter, I wanted to dedicate this month’s newsletter to our good friends Merle and Diana from Hellfire Hot Sauce in the memory of their 2 sons Mike and Jim who were lost in a fatal car crash last Wednesday. I can not imagine how horrible it would be to lose two children on the same day. There are little words you can use to console them at this time as the pain must be unbearable. Yet, I encourage you to leave them your condolences on their company Facebook page HERE and show them the love this community has to give.

When I lost my Dad to Cancer in 2010, I decided to honor him with a tribute called the Lenny Award that I give out on every December 19th to the best products of the year. December 19th is the day he passed away. I chose to celebrate his life, than to mourn his death. It will be a while before Merle and Diana can feel whole again, but I urge them to follow in my footsteps and celebrate their lives with your own special tribute. Something you know they would be proud to be associated with. I am so sorry for your loss, as well as all the people that personally loved your boys. Good people like yourselves should not have to endure such pain and sorrow. You know if you ever need an ear, I am but a call away my friends.

As they say, the show must go on. Welcome to the September newsletter for Chilehead Monthly…

The Great Chicago Vacation & Fiery Festival

Official hot sauce

At the beginning of the year when I had to choose my vacation time at work, I decided to choose the 2 weeks surrounding the Great Chicago Fiery Foods Fest. My vacation started with my birthday which was another incentive, but I had not been to Chicago in 20+ years. When I was there the first time, I had a limited stay, did a Cubs’ baseball game, did a double-decker bus tour, but the food we had was Michael Jordan’s restaurant and fast food. The second visit was for a wedding in Kalamazoo, MI and we only flew into Chicago and stayed one night for a bachelor’s party. Being a foodie I wanted to explore the best of deep dish pizza and Italian Beef Sammiches this time around. Having a fiery food festival build around my visit was my kind of vacation.

Columbus, OH Fiery Food Festival 2016

Bluestone-Columbus-Ohio

John “CaJohn” Hard has given me the exclusive announcement just now that the North Market Fiery Food Festival from years past has now changed it’s name and the venue and looks like it is now back and bigger than ever. It was the thing to do each and every year on President’s Day Weekend until the new management at the North Market decided that it was not important enough and rented out the top floor of the Market for the next 3 years. So after missing out this past year it was a blow to the faithful vendors and chileheads who made it to the event. When CaJohn inquired about the availability of such a premium venue and downtown Columbus location as the Bluestone, (which is an old church that has turned itself into a place to hold concerts), the promoters at the Bluestone jumped at the opportunity to host it. ILoveItSpicy is the first official sponsor of the new reinvigorated Columbus Festival at the Bluestone and we are very proud to have been asked to be a part of it as we have been in past North Market Festivals. Thank you CaJohn for the honor.

So now, please get your cell phone and PC calendars updated for President’s Day Weekend in Columbus. February 13-14, 2016 is the dates now. Anyone else looking forward to having the Festival back as well as the Fiery Asian Dinner? For more information and available vendor spots, please contact CaJohn, but you better do it tomorrow because the celebration has begun with some new tasty Scorpion Beer!

2015 California Hot Sauce Expo

Building on the 3-year success of the NYC Hot Sauce Expo, Steve Seabury of High River Sauces is taking his show to the west coast on July 11-12, 2015. Located in Long Beach, CA at the beautiful and scenic Rainbow Lagoon Park, the inaugural event will test the elusive California Chilehead to see if this type of extravaganza is right for them. You can see by the map below how close it is to the beach. Which might be a good stop after Puckerbutt’s Guinness Book of World Records Smokin’ Ed’s Carolina Reaper Challenge. More information below about that along with the entire schedule of events. There will be some interesting eating competitions here that include Ramen Noodles, Footlong Hot Dogs, Spicy Tacos, Spicy Burritos and it seems someone also wants to bring our Pizza Eating Contest west coast too. I hope they will do us proud since we were the innovators.

The Ins & Outs of the Chicago Spicy Festivals

http://citybuzz.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Picture-76.png

Never before have we had a fiery food festival in the Windy City, and in 2015 we do not just have 1, we have 2. Not only that, they are just 2 weeks apart from each other. The question is why? I am here to answer that question and many more you might have. Plus, give you a reason why both events are more than worth your time.

Before we get to each show, let us answer that question above with a little background detail. When someone sees the NYC Hot Sauce Expo succeed you begin to wonder if you took it to another big metro area would it succeed there? So much credit goes out to Steve Seabury of High River Sauces for his fortitude and hustle to make that event the success it is. He is trying to show he can do it in Long Beach, California next month with his 1st Annual California Hot Sauce Expo. Much of that success might inspire those in other events to raise their game. Two men in our Chileheads community had a dream to bring an event to Chicago, but neither one knew about the others’ plans. The wheels were in motion and money was paid to secure licenses, contracts and venues. By the time the first show made their grand announcement it was too late to turn back for the other.

Hop Sauce Fest 2015 Recap

Hop Sauce Fest 2015 pic 1 resized

The weather could not have been any better for an outside beach event. The best attribute about this festival is that this is a tourist area that brings in a very young clientele. They do not seem put off by trying new things and with the added liquid courage, they seem intent in trying it all. With only 18 hot sauce vendors, and with no desire to drink the hops I was only going to truly enjoy myself if I got involved in some way. Seeing that Johnny McLaughlin from Heartbreaking Dawns, Steve Seabury from High River Sauces and Austin D’Almeida from Jersey Barnfire were working their booths solo I decided to help them briefly during a busy time of the Festival. I took turns at each booth and I totally had a blast shilling spicy products. Mind you the only time I witnessed it slow was in the last 45 minutes of the event. My favorite part of the event was definitely working those booths, but meeting and talking to my vendor friends is always a highlight whenever I attend these events.

Hop Sauce Fest 2015 – Why Should You Be There?

http://www.hopsaucefest.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Hop-Sauce-Ticket-1024x365.jpg

Before I actually explain why you should be at this event tomorrow on the Jersey Shore, let me first explain what the Hop Sauce Festival is. Imagine an event that combines the love of spicy things with the love of beer. Add in an ongoing music concert, the love of good food and place it on the Jersey Shore at Long Beach Island, and then you might get the idea of what is going down. By the reactions of some of the hot sauce vendors that attended last year, this was quite the place to be at the inaugural event. I did not attend, instead choosing to do the upstart Kempton Pepper Jam, which was more like a Farmer’s Market that an event like this Hop Sauce Festival seems to be. I was not disappointed in my trip because I got to try some amazing new products, but I was jealous at the fanfare this event received. So I am hopping in my jalopy early in the morn and going 4 hours north to see what the hubbub is all about.
