REVIEW: Race City Sauce Works’ The Green Fairy & 98 Octane
I was holding off this review until I could find a second opinion. Alas, I got a visit from Firehead Thomas who lives about 50 miles west of my house in Leesburg, VA. I had him sample a few products, but it was specifically these 2 Race City Sauce Works products I had him cover over to try. The first is The Green Fairy Absinthe Inferno, and then there is 98 Octane which has 4 of the hottest peppers in the world.
I will start off the videos with my 2 reviews of each sauce, and let Thomas wrap it up with his commentary of both sauces together.

Good review – Buddah, I have been enjoying the new site and the mutiple reviews – I hope to see the Race City guys on the circuit soon and try these new sauces out. BTW – if I am correct – xanthan gum is an all natural food thickner used to give a bit more body to a thinner sauce. It is not a preserative – If I recall correctly Race City is another company that prides themself on being all natural. But someone needs to check up on my thoughts and make sure I am right.

I loved the 98 Octane. Maybe you should have tried it first, as I definitely felt a heavy (but slow to build up) burn when I tried it:

Yes, xanthan gum is is used as a thickener and emulsifier (sp?).
I took both it with me to IHOP the other day, and it was pretty good with my scrambled eggs with cheddar. Again, I did not think the sauce was too hot as I would expect it to be with all those evil peppers. Obviously, my heat level is a lot higher than most people. I definitely enjoyed the Green Fairy Absinthe more.
Hey Michael, how are things in Richmond? Race City will be at the Peppers at the Beach event and the NY Fancy Food Show.
Buddah, all is well in Richmond – sales up and business is brisk -I am excited bout the NY Shw – (I gotta get you my booth number when I am back at the home office) and the WoF. But I have bad news on the Peppers show – Gunther’s just signed a contract with the US Navy for their Navy Exchanges – and they have strongly requested me to be at a function for them the same weekend. So I gotta bail on Peppers – I was all ready for a great tailgateing weekend.
Thanks again for all the reviews and comments on our sauces from both Buddah & Scott Roberts. The Green Fairy is definitely a unique and taste specific sauce. The goal behind it was one of multiple flavors using an ingredient that most people would not think of adding. The 98 Octane is a great tasting and very popular sauce since we released it. At fist it was going to be just a limited item, but with its popularity and the ability to find a consistent source for fresh Bhut Jolokia, we have moved it into full production. And yes, it does have some mean peppers in it, but everything in moderation when flavor is the goal. If we wanted to make a screamer that all you got was heat, I am sure like most, we would have gotten dried peppers and extract. but that is not our style… 😀
Thank you too Chad for letting us review your fine products. I did read somewhere on one of the websites that you will be looking to take the 98 Octane up another heat notch. Still planning on that?
Yes. In fact we are working on two additions to the 98 Octane label. The first sauce (98 Octane “NITRO” is a much more potent but still flavorful sauce that will be a tad thicker due to the reduction process that will intensify the heat and flavor. The second (98 Octane “INTIMIDATOR”) will be even hotter and goes beyond just reduction. But both still without the use of any extracts. Just pure chile …
