Peppers at the Beach

I am not sure how much I will be able to post, but I will try to give updates from time to time just so you all know what is happening and who is there. I will have video from the show when I return. I hope to have Defcon Deathmatch footage as well.

This is a 2 day event, so if you decide to make the trip last minute, you still can. Come by the Blogger’s booth and say hello. I also have the very first ILIS bumpersticker, if you would like get some swag.

Update! Here are a few shots from Day One.

Below, from left to right: Chad Lowcock from Race City Sauce Works; Captain Thom and Firehead Thom enjoying some “sloppy thoms”; Crazy Steve of Crazy Steve’s Pickles and Salsa standing with Firehead Thom. Click thumbnails to view a larger image. – Scott

Update from Day 2! Below, from left to right: Chip Hearn recuperating in the Peppers office after getting sunburned yesterday, so the hat’s staying on today; Nick Ney of Cajun Island posing with some blackened chicken; and Scott Roberts‘ flyer (I’m everywhere!) at Brian and Marilyn Meagher‘s table (photo courtesy of Doug Spiros). – Scott

Sorry to hear that Hudd. I was really hoping you were coming.

I got in at 7:45, after leaving work at 7:45, 3-ish. My GPS tried to avoid traffic and brought me through downtown DC at 4pm. Bad GPS! Then 10 miles from Peppers I got caught in a speed trap going from 55 to 25, and got a ticket for $122.25. .25? I was going 45 mph and slowing down with foot off the pedal when the cop decided to run out and point his finger at me. There goes my hot sauce money. 🙁

Well I eventually met up with Passow and then with James Beck, his buddy Jon, and then Chip of Peppers. We had some drnks and food at Dogfish Head Brewery. Yes, I had a foo-foo drink- a strawberry ginger daiquiri. James brought the Spicy RV and some fancy film equipment. Look for video at http://www.spicyrv.com for some beer and food commentary. We had some good conversations including why Peppers did not do anything on their Facebook, Twitter or website pages. I understand their point of view, and in hindsight I think he realizes that things could have been handled better. They did advertise locally, so hopefuuly that will help attendance. The parking lot does not look big, so I will be curious how this will work if we have a lot of vendors. Either Passow and I will head out to explore soon. I made some Buddahmole back at the hotel last night, so I hope it turned out good despite the lack of a kitchen. I had to improvise a prep area. Thank goodness I brought a knife, mixer, and avocado scooper. Well, I will report backer later.

I made a little Buddahmole this morning. 😮

The Buddahmole was a hit, but others can tell you that. Let us talk about the first day of Peppers at the Beach. It was quite windy to start, and 2 tents went bye bye while others shook a lot. It got hot later on,, and the weather was great. I filmed some reviews and will do another 1 or 2 tomorrow. We had about a dozen or so vendors plus Blair was signing free collector bottles inside Peppers. A lot of samples and chatting. 6 blogs were represented – Brian and Marilyn of HotSauceDaily.com, Doug Spiros of PeppersandMore.com, James Beck of SpicyRV.com/eatmoreheat.com, Passow of thehotzoneonline.com and JayT of TheHotPepper.com. Plus Firehead Thomas and I represented ILIS. I will got some on the spot reviews from visiting tourists- a shout out to Paul, Chris and Connor. Wait to you see Connor take on some extract without blinking an eye

Doug brought chocolate covered habaneros, and I have several videos for you, including some lady named Carol who had no clue before taking on the sweet treat. I followed her panic all the way to Ritas for some ice cream. It is gold. I got lit up too, but I will tip my hat to James Beck and JayT who did not blink an eye. There is no Defcon Deathmatch unfortunately, so the pepper videos will have to do.

Speaking to some of the vendors they said that they sold quite a bit, so far so good. We are now heading to Bethany Blues for some award winning bbq with about 20+ people. Should be fun. I will check back later.

sounds fun! No Death Match! That was one thing I was wanting to do so I guess I didn’t miss nothing there. Other than seeing everyone and meeting some new folk I was wanting to meet. Have a good day tomorrow everybody.

Dinner was held at Bethany Blues, an award winning bbq joint, and while the food was great, there was some serious overtones cast over the meal. It seems that some people left without paying their hefty bar tabs and Chip had to pickup the slack on the bill. Not cool at all. Let me note that the dinner and drinks we had yesterday were paid for by Chip too. Very generous, thanks Chip. Just about everyone had enough and left. Huv andhis Brother-in-llaw Neil stayed to the bitter end. I ventured to Peppers ice cream store for a sampling of some bacon ice cream. It had the eww factor and glad the spoonful was all I had. Real bacon in a vanilla ice cream did not work. After having the incredbly great Sinful Peanutbutter Pie I too called it a night. I got back to the room to see Passout errr, I mean Passow sound asleep. I type this in the darkness, so I wish u all a g ood night. More tomorrow..

Hopefully we can get as few people to sign up for the Deathmatch today. Most people seemed too scared yesterday. It was kind of funny. Overall I think the vendors are having a good time, which will continue today. The weather is definitely cooperating.

I am getting ready to head back home to Virginia, but before I do I am getting me some crab legs. I will give you some more details about the products I bought and other things later. Right before I left the crowd was starting to pick up. The first day did not wow me with people, but most of the vendors were happy with sales and the exposure. Will there be another show next year? I will discuss that later My crab legs are here. :p

Back home to video editing hell. I should have something new by midnight if all things go up okay as planned.

Now to answer that question about whether there will be a show next year. While I do not truly have the answer since I am not Peppers, I do believe they would host again. Speaking with Chip, he sees what they could have done better, especially with more backing. As for the vendors, most of the ones I spoke with today all feel like it was worth the drive and effort to be there. There was profit and exposure, and that is what they came for. Success. So if you have success, then you build on that, right? I hope we do it again, and the parking lot is filled with even more vendors and buying customers.

Overall, it was fun, and great seeing the great people out there, new and old.

It was a great weekend and well worth the 9 hour drive. The whole bar tab thing was VERY shitty and apparently some other drama. But I think a great time was had by all, plus we got the Green fairy and 98 Octane into Peppers. Looking to head back some time this summer for more tastings..

I was glad that Annabelle and I, Passow, Chad, Johnny (and his mama) where at a separate table and got our own tab…that made it alot easier on us. That sucks that anyone would just leave after having their fill, without offering to pay their fair share! I had heard that it was some of Chip’s employees (?)

congrats on the Peppers addition. It was great to see you again. I wish I had a video of you burnin’ on Doug’s naga powder. Seeing you gasping was quite the sight. lol

It was great to see everyone again and some for the first time live! yes, that naga powder, although with a nice sweet smoke flavor, that heat just ate me alive. I got caught up in the moment and forgot that peppers dried are much hotter than peppers fresh. I know it would have made for an entertaining video.

Definitely a lot of fun. Glad to see everyone had a good time. It was something completely ‘different’, just the way we like to do things. I have to agree with Huv, traffic was an absolute nightmare, but hey, it’s called taking one for the team!
