UCCFS: Chicken ‘n Dumplings vs Crab Cakes Round 1

These comfort foods are popular favorites to a select portion of this country. If you grew up with either 8 seed chicken and dumplings or 9 seed crab cakes you will understand what I am talking about. I can’t really speak of chicken and dumplings with any authority because I can only remember trying it once. As for crab cakes, I have tried it many times, and each and every time it looked completely different from the time before. Sometimes they are solid, and other times they are soft and flaky. Sometimes we have a crunch and other times they melt on impact. What is a true crab cake? I just do not know. How this battle goes will be how you were raised. I am sure you can say that in regards to every comfort food showdown, but this battle is purely regional in my humble opinion. I have been wrong before. This is the last 8 & 9 seed match-up, and I think the most intriguing. What say you?

went with crab cakes. never had crab cakes but the couple times I tried chicken and dumplins I couldn’t stand the almost raw=like texture of the slimy dumplins. I like my dough baked or fried and not rubbery and gooey.

you would never have made it growing up in my house where rubbery, gooey and burnt were common in just about everything including potato chips, celery stalks and ice.

I guess you gentlemen haven’t had good chicken and dumplings. Both my mom and my ex-wife made FANTASTIC C n’ D. The broth would be a creamy, milky liquid almost like a chicken gravy. The dumplings were fresh, hot, biscuit balls with soft, light, flaky bread-like insides. Get some delicious grilled chicken breast pieces, lightly salt and pepper it (and add a bit of crushed chile seasoning)…Mmmmmmm…

It’s only when the chicken n’ dumpling leftovers sit in the fridge overnight do they soak up the broth and get dense, and rubbery and loose that beautiful, flaky, bread-like texture on the inside.

Crabcakes? They’re good, but the the polar opposite of what I would consider “comfort food”.

I have to agree with Scott! Nothing beats good C & D!!!!! My mom and wife make killer chicken and dumplins. And that’s saying a lot being in Louisiana and great crab cakes all over the place!!!!

Maybe it’s a regional thing again? Perhaps people near the coasts ate crab cakes more often. To me, crab cakes were something you’d eat on special occasions or at parties. 😕

Crab Cakes are big in New England and here in the MD-VA area. Chicken ‘n Dumplings I am not sure where the center for that would be other than southeastern cuisine areas.
