UCCFS Round 2: French Fries (1) vs Onion Rings (8)

Let the battle of the fried side dishes begin. These dishes aren’t exactly what people think about when they think of main courses, but for many they are the quintessential sides to any good meal. French Fries is a number 1 seed because many chileheads chose it as one of their favorite comfort foods in our original poll. It is such a common food that you can get so easily that maybe why it reached out to so many people. Onion rings did not garner as many votes, so you would think the o-ring would not get the vote here, but many many people adore what they offer when they are done the right way. I grew up in NY, and at any good dinner you would get this beer batter, thick, crunchy and soft in the middle onion ring that puts any fast food joints onion rings to shame. So this round is about what experience you have in your food choice. Fries are very common, but can they hold a candle to the best of onion rings? You have to decide here and now. What is your poison? Please share your thoughts on this interesting match-up.

Good (non greasy) onion rings are hard to beat, especially if they’re in a loaf or blooming! Guess I’m burned out on fries.

I just made my own of both of these for dinner the other night. The onions rings were my first every try and I have to say they came out great; sliced real thin with a very light and crispy corn starch batter. Still had to vote with FFs though, not much beats a fresh cut FF straight out of the oil.

It is a tough vote, but my decision came down to the enjoyment I get when I get the thick crinkle cut fries from Nathan’s hot dogs. I rather have those with my meals, and have onion rings as an occasional choice. Although those NY Diner’s make the best onion rings.
